Che do Bheatha Latin-American Cultural Festival

The festival celebrates not only Che Guevara's visit to Kilkee in 1961 but also all things cultural from Latin-America including music, poetry, dance, film, food and a shared history not forgetting the fact that Che Guevara's great grandfather was Irish (Lynch)!

The iconic poster and tee-shirt image of Che Guevara was born as a result of a chance meeting between the artist Jim Fitzpatrick and Che Guevara in Kilkee's Marine Hotel in 1961. Che Guevara and his entourage of 35 were on their way from Prague to Havana and were fog-bound en-route through Shannon Airport.

They ended up staying in Kilkee overnight on 12 September, 1961 in the Strand Hotel in the town. 2011 saw the 50th anniversary of his visit and so the 'Che do Bheatha' Latin-American Cultural Festival was born.

In 2011 it was an honour to have the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland, Teresita Trujillo, open the festival along with the Chilean Consul to Ireland. 2012 will hopefully see more Latin-American consular and musical representation.

A passionate pursuit of their roots and of a sense of belonging, of different colours, words and intentions brought together two Argentine musicians, Miguel Pesce and Pablo Fauaz in 2010.

All two members of this group have established extensive professional careers as musicians in the most important national and international festivals, playing their music in Switzerland , the Netherlands , Greece , Germany , Belgium , Italy , France , Denmark , the United States of America and Canada .

Their high respect for tradition, and their tireless search for the right chord and sensitivity are essential to their artistic work.

sabor cubano

Sabor Cubano is a three piece band with Piano-Bass by Leopoldo Osio, Timbal-Vocals by Frailan Moran and Conga-Lead singer by Evelio Galan.

Evelio Galan was born in Havana, Cuba and began his professional music career playing with the world famous percussionist Tata Guines and his band. Evelio then went on tour both nationally and internationally with Orquestra Juvenia 2000. In 1986 he left this orchestra and joined the great Orquestra Riverside singing alongside one of the most renowned Cuban singers at that time, Tito Gomez. Evelio has also shared the stage with many renowned musicians who at one time or another were part of the group Farandula Cubana. For many years, he has been residing in Ireland and has been involved in numerous music projects including Cuarteto Floradita and Havana Son. At present, he is one of the lead singers of the famous band the Afro Cuban All Stars directed by Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, who performed last May in the National Concert Hall in Dublin.

Frailan Moran Mendive, original from Cuba, is a percussionist and music teacher who obtained his degree and subsequently taught at the National School of Music, Havana, Cuba. While studying Frailan played with numerous groups in Cuba including that of the flautist Orlando Canto, formerly of Los Van Van, the most famous band in Cuba. Frailan is currently teaching percussion in the Music Centre at Kylemore College, Ballyfermot VEC. He has been performing in a large number of fetsivals all over the country, such as Electric Picnic, Sligo Jazz Festival, The Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire, and many more. He gigs on a regular basis and has been involved in numerous music projects including Cuarteto Floradita, Havana Son, United Salseros and now, Sabor Cubano

Jazz Pianist Leopoldo Osio was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela. He started playing piano at a very early age, inspired by Venezuelan Traditional Music. He credits George Shearing as being the first musician that got him hooked on jazz when he was 14 years old. Around this time, Leo began studying with jazz musician and promoter Ivo Farfan, who introduced him to jazz trumpet player Julio Mendoza who was to become his principal mentor and develop his interest in bebop. Leo immersed himself in the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gilliespie, Chucho Valdes and Paquito de Rivera. At the age of 16, he was invited to perform in the Festival de Jazz en el Orinoco with important Venezuelan musicians like Ivo Farfan, Victor Cuica, Roberto Giron, and later the same year The Jazz Festival El Hatillo with Julio Mendoza Quartet.

Clare Three-Legged Stool

Clare Three-Legged Stool was founded in 2003 to celebrate the poetic work of men and women from the three "halves" of Clare. The group has produced two anthologies, a broadsheet, and Hidden Burren – a photographic essay on North Clare accompanied by verse.

Reading by members of the group for the Latin American Festival. Followed by open mic session. This event isn't just us reading our poems but we will also be giving a bit of attention to other poems written about Kilkee over the centuries and also two or three about Che.
